Taste & Flair, July 2018

TG-Studio’s Can Bikini project, featured in Taste & Flair magazine, July issue.

“TG-Studio was commissioned as inteiror deisngers for Can Bikini, a country estate in the pine forests in the north of Ibiza. TG-Studio’s clients, property developers in the UK, had purchased the building a few years earlier and felt that the interiors needed a make over. The clients use the villa for family vacations and privately rent it out to friends when they are not in residence. Their design brief was not to create the stereotypical Bali feel throughout the property, but to rework the design to give it an interesting electic feel with calm, happy, urban lines. The property consists of a 3-bedroom house, surrounded by two hectares of lush gardens. Two additional houses in the grounds provide another two bedrooms with en-suite bathrooms.

The main house consists of a larger living room-cum-dining room and kitchen, with two main bedrooms with en suite bathrooms on the ground level and another bedroom on the first floor with its own shower and roof terrace. In the indoor living area, the new wood burning fireplace has a flamed granite base and black steel back. This feature also holds a 70-inch TV with a surround sound system and hides a new double height towel storage to replace the one that has been converted into a chill out niche.

Planning restrictions meant the main building count not be extended so TG-Studio had to work within the existing structure. This was not problematic as the building and inherited design are attractive and, as it was mostly the interior that was neglected, the project became an interior design job.

The main room features 4-metre high ceilings and large sliding glass doors. In summer, the doors can be slid back so that the living room and the outside terrace blend into one open space which flows from the indoor kitchen all the way to the pool area. TG-Studio demolished the existing kitchen and installed a state-of-the-art Doca design with Gagganeu appliances, flame black granite worktops, a grey tinted mirrored backsplash and white painted oak doors.

The gardens surround a large pool and pool house with an outdoor relaxation area that doubles up as a party space or chill out area with a bar. The pool house was extended and re-organised to include a large bar with built-in fridges, a grill and a woodfire pizza oven. TG-Studio designed the furniture and selected the Holly Hunt fabrics, which was then manufactured and upholstered by local contractors. The disused bread oven previously used to store pool towels, was hidden behind a partition wall. TG-Studio redesigned the space so that it now opens up into the living room, and introduced a circular roof light and four different shaped windows with yellow tinted glass to create a roomy chill out niche/snug. At night, the windows glow yellow, standing out against the stone facade.

The natural stone flooring throughout was sanded and sealed and the entire house re-painted in Ibizan cool white. When furnishing the villa, TG-Studio selected colours and textures to give the interior deisng a ‘London cool hits Ibiza’ feel. The second bedroom has a Moroccan influence and the studio has an organic feel.

The Bali house on the grounds – imported from Bali itself, hence the name – features an amazing open air bathroom. TG-Studio added furniture to the house to compliment the scheme, including the Bobbili Stoom wooden side tables from Andrew Martin, and the birdcage desk lamp.” – Words in Taste and Flair magazine, July 2018 issue.
